Faculty of Visual Art of Kumaun University is a unique Faculty in Uttarakhand, India. It has established to promote the studies of Drawing and Painting in the broader way and other inter-related subjects. The Faculty has launched its new professional self-finance courses BFA and MFA. The Faculty also offers research programs. The Department of Painting as well as the faculty both is committed to train the sophisticated creative art practices through its programme in the painting stream/subjects. Regular courses of B.A. and M.A. in Painting are run in the two campuses at Almora and Nainital including more than five affiliated colleges while BFA and MFA in Painting course run in the Almora Campus only. Recently Gyanarthi Media Kashipur has launched BFA. In our department/ faculty students learn to create an image using any of the wide variety of tools and techniques in dry media, such as, graphite pencils, charcoals, pen and ink, markers, inkers, brushes, wax colour pencils, crayons and pastels in drawing. The use of applying pigment in a carrier or medium and a binding agent/glue on a two dimensional surfaces such a paper, canvas and a wall is learnt in painting. Computer Graphics, Photography and Clay modeling are also taught in this course. Finally they learn practical and adequate theory of the subjects with further scope of research and freelancing. Faculty/ Department have organized several activities - lectures, workshops, seminars and exhibitions time to time. Number of literature has been published in the form of monograph, books and catalogue on art including tribal, folk and culture. Faculty members availed minor and major research projects from the UGC and fellowship from Korea Foundation. In 2016, the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Programme was availed by us for the faculty/university inviting to Professor Valentina DuBasky from USA. Practices training and teaching facilitated by our best and experienced colleagues, coordinator of Fine Art, teachers including guest faculties. Maximum of our students from the faculty has been placed in the Government/Semi Government jobs especially for teaching as well as freelancing in their respective field.
At present only Painting stream is functional under self finance. About Head of the department: Shekhar Chandra Joshi Head of the Department of Drawing and Painting. He has had varied experience –as a founder editor of International Journal of Visual Arts Studies and Communication (IJVASC); Reader in Fine Arts at Assam (Central) University; Part time Correspondent of Press Trust of India; Lecturer of Art at UPSS Lucknow; Founder Secretary and President of Uttarakhand Artist Welfare Association; Advisor to Empowerment, Art Journal Vanchha & Journal Of Indian Visual Arts etc.
Recipient of prestigious International fellowship of Korea Foundation, Seoul; research grants of Department of Culture, Government of India and the University Grants Commission; honors of the American Biographical Institute, Inc.; and Uttaranchal Kala Samman etc., he has to his credit numerous publications that include books on ‘Adhunik Chitrakala Ka Itihas’ by PBD Publication, ‘Kala ke Sidhhant avem Chitrakala ke Rang’and ‘Korea ki kala’ by Almora Book Depot; ‘Art And Communication’ by Indian Publishers Distributors, monograph on ‘Fantasy of Raga’, ‘All India Annual Art Exhibition’ etc. and research papers in journal along with several articles on art, culture and society including original paintings in the news papers and Magazines in India and abroad. Regarding his work he said “My work represents the total experience of more than a half century of observing nature, society and spirit in paint after a detailed study of the World Art History and the experiences gathered from the world”.
He has participated in seminars, conferences and workshop in India and abroad including Australia, Korea, France, Austria and Canada etc. Besides self solo and group shows he has curetted some important exhibition for the Uttarakhand Artist Welfare Association in association with Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Punjabi University, Patiala; and Kumaun University, Nainital. His critically acclaimed works have been exhibited in India and abroad and published in various reputed collection.
His current research focuses on Study of Visual Arts, Aesthetics and Culture in theory and figurative as well as nonfigurative work related to Himalaya, Sea and Space. He has been exploring self fingers nails and colours technique initially developed by him on paper and paper on canvas or without paper on canvas in mixed media.
