Brief Details/Background of the Department

Women’s Studies Centre was established in2011 with the great efforts of the Founder Director of the Centre Prof. Neeta Bora Sharma and under the Vice Chancellorship of Professor V.P.S. Arora. The Centre has fulfilled the UGC Phase 1 criteria set for women studies centre in 2016, and has since taken many significant steps towards achieving awareness and sensitization of Gender issues in the D.S.B. Campus and in surrounding communities. One of the significant achievements of the centre is the successful approval for MA in Women Studies by the board of Studies, and the centre is looking forward to commence the Masters programme from session 2024-2025.

Report on Women Awareness Week

The Women’s Studies Centre celebrated Women Awareness Week on the occasion of International Women’s Day from 3rd March to 8th March 2023. The week commenced with a Quiz Competition held on 3rd March and Essay Competition on 7th March in the D.S.B. Campus premises. The themes quiz were women ragging, gender equality, women rights, significance of women’s day etc. Another event essay competition on topic “innovation and technology for women empowerment”. Prize distribution held on 3rd April 2023.

The Women’s Studies Centre from 2nd of March to 11th of March 2024,conducted a weeklong event which included Essay Competition, Aipan Competition, use of Waste Materials and a lecture on the topic “Bharat ke Punarutthan mein Mahilaon ke Bhumika”. At first, an Essay Competition was held on 2nd of March, followed by Aipan Competition on 4th of March, use of Waste Material on 6th March, and a lecture was delivered n 11th of March by Mr. Sujeet Kuntal.

Women Studies Centre honored these women in 2024 for their endeavours in women empowerment

Achievements

  • MA in Women Studies: The Centre is about to start a Master's Programme in Women's Studies and the Board of Studies has approved the syllabus for first semester of the programme.
  • Empowering Women: The Centre has been at the forefront of empowering women from diverse backgrounds by providing them with educational opportunities, skill development programs, and awareness campaigns. Through its initiatives, the Centre has helped countless women gain confidence, independence, and access to resources.
  • Research and Publications: The Centre has made significant contributions in the field of women’s studies through its research and publications. It has produced numerous scholarly articles, reports, and books on various topics related to women’s rights, gender equality, and social justice.
  • Community Engagement: The Centre has actively engaged with the local community, organizing workshops, seminars and public lectures on gender- related topics. It has collaborated with grassroots organizations, government agencies, and NGOs to raise awareness about gender-based violence, discrimination and women’s rights.
  • Advocacy and Policy Influence: The Centre has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and has actively influenced policy changes at various levels. It has provided valuable inputs to government bodies, policymakers, and international organizations on issues such as gender mainstreaming, legislation, and implementation of gender-sensitive policies.
  • Skill Development and Capacity Building: The Centre has played a vital role in building the capacity of individuals working in the field of women’s empowerment. It has conducted training programs and workshops for professionals, activists, and students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to address gender disparities effectively.

Future Plans

  • Education and Skill Development: This includes starting a self-financed course in Women’s Studies. To expand educational programs to equip women with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing world. This also includes developing entrepreneurship, leadership, financial literacy, and technology training modules.
  • Research and Data Analysis: To further advance our understanding of women’s issues, we will strengthen our research efforts by publishing a Research Journal (Gender Watch: Compendium of Data Research and Policies). Our research will provide valuable insights and evidence-based recommendations to policymakers, organizations, and communities.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: We will seek Partnerships with the like- minded organizations locally and globally through MOUs. Collaborative initiatives may include joint research projects, knowledge sharing, advocacy campaigns, and capacity building programs.
  • Community Engagement and Grassroots Empowerment: To ensure the inclusion and representation of diverse women, we will actively involve local communities in our programs. This may involve organizing awareness campaigns, workshops, and community-led initiatives that address specific challenges faced by marginalized women.
  • Technology and Innovation: This includes leveraging digital platforms, social media, and online learning tools to disseminate information, provide remote support, and connect women across borders.
  • Setting up Retail Outlets: As suggested by the former Governor of our state Margaret Alava, the Centre is striving to establish retail outlets by women entrepreneurs and artisans offering handicrafts like Ringaal, Aipan, hand-knitted woolen clothes , authentic and organically grown cereals, pulses and millets like madua, bhang seeds, flavoured salts, and local products like jams, squashes and pickels, etc.
