The Central Library of Kumaun University in Nainital was established in the year 1973 and has since grown to house a very rich collection of books spanning various branches of knowledge. Serving as the nerve centre of the university, this library operates under the supervision of a Deputy Librarian, ensuring its smooth and efficient functioning. To enhance user convenience and streamline processes, an automated circulation counter has been made available for the issue, return, and renewal of books. Additionally, the library has adopted an "Open Access system," allowing users greater freedom in accessing its resources. Overall, a well-stocked library like this is considered a valuable asset to the university, providing essential support to students, faculty, and researchers in their academic and research endeavors.

Library automation refers to the utilization of data processing machines, specifically computers, to execute traditional library tasks such as acquisitions, cataloguing, circulation, serial control, and other related activities. The Central Library of Kumaun University has embraced this technological advancement by adopting various Library Management Systems (LMS) over the years. Since 2007, the library has been utilizing Alice for Window as its primary automation system. Furthermore, in 2020, the library incorporated E-Granthalaya 4.0 LMS, which is hosted on the cloud and developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in New Delhi. It's worth noting that work is still in progress concerning this system. Additionally, demonstrating its commitment to preserving historical literature and making it accessible to a broader audience, the library has digitized 850 books published before 1950. These digitized books are now available for access at dli.ernet.in, contributing to the digitization and preservation of valuable literary works for future generations.
