The Department of Home Science was established at D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University, Nainital, in the year 1989. The department was started at B.A. level with Home Science as one of the subjects among other subjects offered by the Faculty of Arts. The department is working actively for the academic and all round development of the students. All five major fields of Home Science viz. Foods and Nutrition, Human Development, Clothing and Textiles, Family Resource Management and Home Science Extension Education are taught at undergraduate level. Ph. D. Programme in Home Science has been started from 2011-12 as per UGC Norms.

The department has been working for the welfare and upliftment of the community along with ICDS and Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India for past 20 years.
Objectives:
• To provide understanding and appreciate role of Home Science, in the development and well-being of individuals, families and communities. • To deliver knowledge about the sciences and technologies which will enhance the quality of life of the people • To acquire and impart professional and entrepreneurial skills for economic empowerment of student in particular, and community in general • To develop professional skills in the fields of Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Housing and Interior Decoration, Human Development, Extension Education and Communication • To prepare young students for higher studies, research and extension work • To take technologies in the field of Home Science from laboratory to the people and from field/people to laboratories and institutions.
