The Department of Home Science was established at D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University, Nainital, in the year 1989. The department was started at B.A. level with Home Science as one of the subjects among other subjects offered by the Faculty of Arts. The department is working actively for the academic and all round development of the students. All five major fields of Home Science viz. Foods and Nutrition, Human Development, Clothing and Textiles, Family Resource Management and Home Science Extension Education are taught at undergraduate level. Ph. D. Programme in Home Science has been started from 2011-12 as per UGC Norms.

The vision of the department is to impart vocational education and hands on training to the students so that they are placed in different public, private, government and non-governmental organisations and contribute towards the development of the state and the nation. The department has been working for the welfare and upliftment of the community along with ICDS and Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India for past 20 years.

Objectives:

• To provide understanding and appreciate role of Home Science, in the development and well-being of individuals, families and communities.
• To deliver knowledge about the sciences and technologies which will enhance the quality of life of the people
• To acquire and impart professional and entrepreneurial skills for economic empowerment of student in particular, and community in general
• To develop professional skills in the fields of Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Housing and Interior Decoration, Human Development, Extension Education and Communication
• To prepare young students for higher studies, research and extension work
• To take technologies in the field of Home Science from laboratory to the people and from field/people to laboratories and institutions.

About the Head :Dr. Lata Pande completed B.Sc. and M.Sc. in foods and nutrition from G.B,P.U A.& T, Pantnager followed by doctoral work at the H.N.B.Garhwal central University, Srinagar (Uttarakhand) on health and nutritional status of women of kumaun hills. Her fields of research are Ecology of malnutration and chemical analysis of Phytofoods of Uttarakhand. Presently she is also engaged in extension activities for the upliftment of women and children. She joined Kumaun University, Nainital in 1989 as the founding head of department home science and since inception of home science department working as head and convener. Besides teaching, she is associated with multiple administrative responsibilities of university as -Member- Academic Council, Member -University Court, Worden- K.P. Girls Hostel , Member- Executive Council. She is Subject Expert as well as Resource Person in; All India Coordination Research Department, ICDS, Utaranchal, Women Empowerment and Child Development Department, ICDS, Uttaranchal.ATI (Administrator Training Institute) Nainital ,ASC- Kumaun University, Nainital, Directorate of Higher Education, Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand council of science and technology, dehradun ,member, Rajeev Gandhi Kishori Sashktikaran Pariyajana (A central govt. continuous long term project).
